Very often I hear people that are coming to the US for vacation or for a brief period of time interested in buying a prepaid cell phone line, so they can just change the GSM card in their own handset. While prepaid/pay-as-you-go service is much more uncommon in the country when comparing to, for example, some countries in Latin America, this service does exist.

AT&T has the ‘GoPhone’ which basically charges the customer $3 per each day you place or receive calls, for unlimited minutes nationwide. This can be a very good option for people that travel a lot to the US, so they don’t have to pay for a bill when they’re abroad, and especially for those that like talking a lot, since you don’t have to worry about airtime minutes (when typically you’d be charged whether you made or received the call).
